The story behind the place
A quiet cantonment hill town with Jaunsari roots and colonial-era layers.
Chakrata sits above the Yamuna valley and served as a summer retreat for senior East India Company officials during the British period. Its appeal today is the same combination of forest, cool air and distance from crowded resort towns. Nearby Lakhamandal adds a much older mythic layer: local tradition connects the Shiva temple complex with the Mahabharata story of the Lakshagriha, the house of lac built to trap the Pandavas.
