Himachal Tourism lists June to early November as a good Spiti window. October can deliver crisp skies and dramatic landscapes, but cold nights, early snow and road conditions can change quickly. Every October departure should be reconfirmed close to travel.

The story behind the place
The “middle land” — a cold desert shaped by Buddhism, altitude and isolation.
Spiti is commonly interpreted as the 'middle land', reflecting its position and deep cultural links with Tibetan Buddhism. The valley is not just a road-trip backdrop: it holds some of the Himalaya’s most important monastic heritage. Tabo Monastery was founded in 996 AD and remains one of Spiti’s most revered institutions, while Dhankar once functioned both as a monastery and a strategic fort for the valley. Kaza provides the practical base for reaching Key Monastery and high villages such as Langza, Hikkim and Komic.

Tabo Monastery was founded in 996 AD and preserves temples, chortens, wall paintings and centuries of Buddhist tradition.

Dhankar fort-monastery
Perched dramatically above the Spiti River, Dhankar historically helped guard the valley and served as a seat of the local ruler.

Evening assembly and overnight Volvo journey towards Shimla.

Shimla → Chitkul / Rakchham
Drive through Kufri, Narkanda and the Indo-Tibetan Highway to the Sangla/Chitkul region. Overnight in Chitkul or Rakchham.

Day 2
Chitkul → Nako → Tabo
Follow the Sutlej and Spiti landscapes, stop around Nako and continue to Tabo for the night.

Tabo → Dhankar → Kaza
Explore Tabo Monastery, continue towards Dhankar and reach Kaza for your next stay.

Kaza high villages
A full local circuit covering Key Monastery, Chicham Bridge, Komic, Hikkim and Langza, subject to road conditions.

Kaza → Chandratal
Cross the rugged high-altitude route towards Chandratal for a camp night and stargazing when skies are clear.

Day 6
Chandratal → Manali
Depart early via Batal/Chhatru and the Atal Tunnel side, reaching Manali by evening.

Manali → Delhi
Morning departure for Delhi. Arrival timing depends on traffic and mountain-road conditions.
